If you handle your dragon too often, you will probably know that they do have sharp claws. You will know this better if your dragon is aggressive and gives you some punishment if you annoy him excessively. Most dragon owners are concerned about clipping their pet’s claws. Well, doing a pedicure does not affect the performance of your pet. It can continue to climb and run around without difficulty if you trim the claws slightly.
However, your dragon may not be able to climb for a couple of days, if you trim its claws a little bit more than what is required. Dragon’s nails or claws are thickest at the point where they join the toe. You can use nail clippers to trim the nail followed by a nail filer to smoothen the edges. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that your dragon can be injured seriously if you cut the vein that runs in the same area.
Before you actually trim your pet’s claws, it is important that you get all the supplies needed for the job. You can use cat or dog clippers for the task or go with standard clippers you use to trim your own nails. Your kit should also include corn starch and other material to stop bleeding. It is better that you ask someone to help you hold the dragon because it may try to free itself during the process and get injured.
If you are clipping your pet’s claws for the first time, you should try to find someone who is familiar with the process and can help you do it safely. Getting help from your pet’s vet is also not a bad idea. You should get into a comfortable position first before you proceed. Try holding your pet’s toe and gently trim the nail from the tip. Repeat this process for each toe until all toes are done.
Remember your dragon needs to be calm during the process. If your dragon struggles at any point, you should wait for it to relax. You should never attempt to cut nails when your dragon is scared or aggressive. This can cause accidental cutting of the vein which may lead to severe blood loss if the bleeding is not stopped immediately. You should disinfect the wounds without delay to prevent them from getting infected.
