You may have a bought a lovely green Chinese water dragon and want to see it happy. For this, it is better that you get familiar with the natural habitat these dragons are used to when you build their new home. These creatures live for long so you need to make enough arrangements to keep them happy and entertained.
Chinese water dragons live high on trees, so it would be better if you provide them the same. Before you design a new home for your pet, remember water dragons are arboreal creatures. They feel more comfortable and secure when they are high up and you can give them the same environment in captivity.
‘The bigger, the better’ also applies to the aquarium or tank you use to house a water dragon. Adult dragons can grow up to 3 feet in length; therefore, the enclosure you choose should be at least six feet in length. If you wish to have a customized tank for your water dragon, the length of your tank should be twice as that of your pet.
As their name suggests, Chinese water dragons love to stay in water. You can have a large water dish in the dragon enclosure to give it space to swim comfortably. Water dragons also enjoy soaking to keep their skin moist. You can have a shallow water dish for baby dragons whereas large water pans can be used for adult water dragons.
Plenty of plants and branches for climbing and supply of water would keep your pet more than happy. If you like to keep your pet more entertained, you can add in a number of basking areas. Thick leaves are one of the favorite hiding spots for water dragons. It will also make the tank more fun for your newest companion.
There are a number of green plants that can be used to recreate the wild environment for your Chinese water dragon. You can use natural and artificial plants with thick foliage throughout the tank to make your pet dragon feel more secure and at home. Live plants such as Ficus, Dracaena and hibiscus are definitely good options.
Planting non-toxic plants in the enclosure also help you maintain the required humidity levels in the enclosure. You can find out more information about cage décor in the “Size and Décor of Chinese Water Dragon Enclosure“.
